I enjoy how this is told similar you lot might see a village play acting out the story. The players all wear amazing headgear as the characters of the Dominicus, Moon and H2o. It is a unproblematic and direct forward telling of this legend of the Sun and Moon in the Sky.Lord's day and H2o are friends and Sun always goes to visit h2o. He keeps asking if it's ok to let more family in and the Dominicus says aye. Eventually water floods the home and the Sun and Moon must go up in the sky as there is no room left. It'southward another world story nearly the great inundation. Every culture has them.
The niece idea this story was ok. Information technology didn't make much sense to her. She gave it 2 stars. The nephew liked the masks they wore. He thought this story was ok too, not funny, only a little weird too. He gave this 3 stars.

This Nigerian folk tale posits a previous sharing of earth by sun, moon and h2o until h2o visits the business firm of the lord's day. Water has warned the sunday that his retinue is too large but the lord's day argues otherwise; sun and moon grow increasingly uncomfortable every bit h2o fills the house until they are forced out on the roof, eventually into their permanent places in the sky. As told to Mr. Dayrell by the Efik-Ibibio peoples, it's a difficult concept to moving picture, a problem the creative person handles past depicting African tribesmen accordingly and skillfully dressed as sun, waning-faced moon and water. Mr. Lent's precise contours incorporate the abstraction past suggesting a dramatic reenactment, admirably stand for generalized African motifs. An original approach to a traditional belief, and seeing may be believing.

Response to Two Professional Reviews:
I agree that the usage of the unique tribesmen to depict the sun, moon, and water was a good bear upon to articulate imagery that tin can exist difficult to depict. It created a fun story to read.
Evaluation of Literacy Elements: African folktales tin be difficult because they can accept elemental objects and personify them. This resulted in illustrations that were largely sparse outside of the detailed depictions of the components mentioned in the story. This allows the focus to exist maintained on the dynamics between the elements.
Consideration of Instructional Application:
This Nigerian folktales could be a useful tool to deviate from a euro-axial approach to early childhood literature, in favor of more multicultural texts. I could besides do a unit on personification, using this texts depictions of the dominicus, moon, and world as examples.
I dearest reading folklore, such as this 1, to my students. It encourages them to recall creatively and challenge the things that they accept as fact. Information technology as well provides a first hand expect into the values of other cultures. The would be a neat mentor text to stalk off of when encouraging students to write their own folklore tales or creative narratives. It is also a great read a-loud to spark postal service reading predictions and deeper conversations.
Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky is a WOW book for me for its beautiful illustrations and use of dialogue and problem solving. My students are absorbed past this story whenever we read it. I would recommend this book for all anile readers, though it may need scaffolding for younger children.

This was a decent book. I guess I don't have to review it
At whatsoever given moment I probably have 3 or 4 children'due south books on my "to-read" shelf. Given that the shelf currently has 541 books on it, I'd say the children'southward books are a little under-represented.I also generally don't review them unless they've been reviewed past some other goodreads friend of mine and they're the reason I got the book - equally in Luann's review of this one, or I've been forced to read information technology a dozen times to one or both of my kids...
This was a decent book. I gauge I don't accept to review it since it was spoiled by the goodreads info on it. One judgement... that'due south it, and Elphinstone'southward piece of work was spoiled... well, not spoiled spoiled... considering it was still pretty good.
...more-Observation: The pictures in this volume are really unique
This story is an Eastern Nigerian pour quoi story. The story is very elementary and short, nevertheless the concept is a little difficult to understand and imagine, and then the artist drew pictures that draw the Sun and Moon as African Tribes people who lived on earth. The Sunday and Water used to be skilful friends, then the Sun invites water into the business firm of the Sunday, only the h2o quickly fills up the house forcing the sunday and the moon to alive in the heaven.-Observation: The pictures in this book are really unique.
-Connection: I accept never heard of this folktale, and so it was hard to connect, but (QUESTION) I wonder how ordinarily known this story is around the earth?
-I am surprised information technology is not a more mutual story, because as a kid I would have loved to have a reason behind why the dominicus and was in the heaven. I never questioned why, but in different countries many people experience different theories.
-Opinion: I enjoyed this book because information technology is a unique story with a little chip of multicultural diversity.
This would be a wonderful volume for Blackness History Month or for a multicultural unit. It would also be amazing as office of a text assault dissimilar origin stories from around the earth. Comparing how different groups of people from around the world explain the Sun and the Moon. This could be used at any class level, in middle and high schoolhouse, I would take students research different creation myths and even take them write their own creation stories for the natural phenomena in the region where they live. It would likewise be great to accept them research local creation stories from the indigenous people in their expanse. Lots of wonderful extension activities are available for this story.

Elphinstone Dayrell'south folktale "Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky" provides an imaginative caption for a natural phenomenon in a mode that appeals to young children. Dayrell'southward personification of the sun, water, and the moon brand this book an engaging read for elementary anile children. I think Dayrell's folktale makes for a fun and interesting introduction to a lesson on the forces of nature, such as the properties of water, the moon cycle, and more.Additionally, the illustrations depicted in "Why the Dominicus and the Moon Live in the Sky" can help to start a dialogue nearly the similarities and differences betwixt art in literature among unlike cultures. The illustrations in Dayrell'due south book can spark a discussion near fine art and culture and how they shape our lens on the world nosotros live in.
I can envision this volume being used in the classroom as a tool to showtime a chat virtually nature or civilization. I think it would be interesting to link this story to a literacy assignment where students could write and illustrate their ain folktales based on something they like to imagine to be true in their own lives.

Education Idea: There are two teaching ideas that come up to mind when I think of this volume. one: Using this book to teach nearly who different cultures have different views and beliefs (Social Studies) two: Reading this book in a science context to introduce a solar organization unit. Reading this book and then request why it's dissimilar from the existent reasons the dominicus and moon are in the sky is a great word and brainstorming thought for students and tin can go them prepped for the content that is about to be taught. ...more

Review: I call back this was a very interesting book telling the legend of how the moon and the sunday got into the sky. The book is based off of an onetime African folktale and the illustrations in this volume really show the African influence. I think children would exist very entertained past this story since the water, lord's day and moon are something they see and meet every single day- the can make their ain connections to it.
Possible in-class uses:
-What is a folktale?
-Kids tin make up their own story about the sun, the moon and the water and draw pictures to go along with it.
Interesting pictures highlight this African inspired tale most how the Sun and the Moon came to exist in the heaven.

Dayrell, Elphinestone. Why the Dominicus and the Moon Alive in the Sky (1968). Elphinstone Dayrell wrote Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky and it was illustrated by Blair Lent. The folktale tells the story of how The Sun and Moon came to be in the sky. The tale begins with a friendship betwixt The Dominicus and Water. The Sun often visits Water but Water never visits The Lord's day. Somewhen The Sun builds a house large enough to invite Water and its family but water has a very large family and every bit they fill The Sun'southward house there is no room for The Sun and Moon, and then they must float above where they stay for the balance of time. The folktale was simple and touched on parts of friendship while telling a tale of how things came to exist. It was easy to follow the tale with the illustrations to support the story. The illustrations prove The Sun and Water as native people wearing masks. The Sun's house began on state, where Water'southward house was far from land and yous had to cross a span to visit. Colors of brown, dark-green, bluish and gold were used and it gave to a very detailed nevertheless obviously illustration of the text. I enjoyed how Water's family members were depicted through shields and masks of different animals, fish and plants. The story abruptly ends after The Sun and Moon are in the sky, it would have been nice to have a bit of story subsequently to tell how the friendship between The Sun and Water changes. This volume has a target audience of iii-7 years old.

I honey this story considering it is a folk story from the Southern Nigerian West Africa tribes. It is a neat multicultural book and information technology is a Caldecott Honor Book.
This would be a smashing book to apply for a lesson about folktales and how folktales were created to explain natural phenomenons in the earth.

I like this volume because the Sun wants the Water to come up to his business firm, but he doesn't accept a big enough firm, so they outset building a large enough house and the water starts flowing in and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of creatures like water bulls flow in the house. This is such a fun story virtually the separation of water and the sun and moon. I like how the dominicus, moon, and h2o are all personified and appear as people in this book. This is an interesting tale of how they all used to be on globe, until the water overflowed the home of the sun and moon, pushing them to the sky. I really enjoyed reading this book, and thought information technology was a beautiful petty tale!
I loved the ending - great book! I really enjoyed reading this - only a really unproblematic, straightforward story. The illustrations are great and I particularly enjoyed the masks of the water people. I love the colors too! Five stars all the fashion!
